It was around seven pm on a Tuesday and even though we were promised a dry and fresh evening, it hadn't given up on raining! Brian and me were sitting going over the sports rankings, waiting for the next telephone call that day to come in. In due time we had the phone call from a lovely women on a company trip who had pulled into the Texaco petrol garage in Bunwell Bottom and put petrol in a diesel mum's BMW X6 hire car by mistake. She was somewhat distressed apparently, crying "I just can't believe I've messed up the vehicle! I am just so familiar with filling my petrol car that I had forgot that I was running a diesel!" I asked her to settle back and not to be concerned, and also that these things unfortunately often happen. She managed to get the vehicle to a safe position and, because it was just a few minutes away from our van, we could find her rather quickly. The wrong fuel was removed and she was able to return to the hotel she was residing at. Although we got very drenched, it was all worth the time to see her drive home calm and not so worried. A job in Norfolk done well in my opinion!

The 3 things you NEED to know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In your Fuel

All over Norfolk we are encountering a growing number of instances of AdBlue contamination when a person has poured AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is partially thanks to drivers not understanding the way to use it (remember: it is actually not a fuel additive), and partly due to the fact that the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are normally right near to one another on the car.

Well, precisely what is the matter with putting AdBlue in a diesel vehicle?

Seeing as AdBlue is predominantly ionised water, it is actually almost the same as pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water do not mix in the slightest and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Moreover, the urea is particularly corrosive to the fuel system hoses and seals and is more prone to crystallisation, blocking injectors and fuel filters. Assuming you put AdBlue into the fuel tank drain it asap. And of course take care not to start up the motor - not even to shift it to a parking area. Assuming you have started the vehicle you may in all probability need to have the complete fuel system purged and filters changed out.

Contact us if it turns out you are a victim of AdBlue contamination. We will help you. We are Specialists in dealing with contaminated fuel and will take care of different types of AdBlue liquid contamination.

Marine Fuel Drains

If there is the incorrect fuel, or even contaminated fuel (most typically water contamination or degraded fuel) in a boat we will help remove it. So long as the boat is either dry-docked, or parked close to an automobile parking spot we can reach the storage tanks and drain out the contaminated fuel. We've successfully done numerous fuel drains at marinas and boatyards across the country.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
